Local naturally dyed yarn and hand spun yarn
Marisa, the owner of Abenaia yarn, moved from Galicia (Spain) to Portugal in 2004 and worked as a terrestrial ecology researcher. In 2018 she moved to the countryside with its family and decided to start working on her own project of local agroecological dynamization, raised in the woods of São Mamede Natural Park (Marvão, Portugal). This project was born to make Portuguese yarn more visible and also collect some ethnobotanical knowledge. Through the use of Portuguese merino wool she try to involve the shepherds and to recover the artisan work of wool processing. Buying wool to local shepherds and paying them a proper value makes their work more sustainable. All sheep are free range and mulesing is not practiced.
Abenaia have two different products:
Artisanal yarn that is scoured, teased, carded and spun by hand.
Woolen spun yarn that is non superwash, not bleached and have no silicone based softeners, it is a 2 ply yarn with 200m per 50gm. This is a special batch of local merino wool that was spun in the nearest mill.
Yarn is sold in natural colours or dyed with plants that are found in the surroundings, availability of colors depends on the seasons. All the water used in the process comes from a natural spring in her land, and it is reused in the garden. Dying is made in a wood stove, and the wood is the result of forest maintenance.
