Hand dyed yarn, Undyed yarn, Knitting patterns
Using natural dyes and taking our inspiration from our magical landscape we enjoy every step of the natural dye process. Local provenance; knowing where our yarn and our dyes have come from is very important to us. Foraging for the local dye plants really connects us to the landscape and Skye has an abundance of dye plants such as meadow sweet, tansy and dock for yellows, alder and heather for creams and golds, bog myrtle and nettle for greens, birch for fawn and greys. We do use two ancient dyes also, madder and indigo, adding these two dyes and playing with combinations make our colour spectrum infinite! Our yarn bases are all spun from British fleeces in mills here in the UK. We have two new yarn bases we are going to introduce to at Botanica: 'Smuid' a deliciously soft 4 ply made from a blend of Blue faced Leicester and Gotland fleeces and 'Tuath' 100 percent Shetland fleeces from Shetland itself in a 2 ply jumper weight, perfect for colour work.
